Author Interview 

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I am late bloomer to the author world. Since my childhood, I’ve loved to read, but never thought about writing a book until a few years ago.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I actually started writing as a Twilight fan fiction author. There are many bestselling romance authors that came out of this community and now have very well known books. It was a great training ground for writers. I am very lucky to have seen many friends in this community succeed beyond their wildest dreams as authors.

What book has had the most influence in your life?

The most important book and greatest influence on my life as a writer is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. I fell in love her brooding, tortured Edward Rochester, a truly perfect Byronic character.

How much truth is in your fiction?

My fiction is truly fiction. Or at least it has been so far. There are personality traits from people I have known or places in my books that are actually real. For me, writing is an activity that lets my mind create a unique world with unique characters.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor and why?

When I first started down this road, I looked to a blog post by Tracy Garvis Graves who wrote one of my favorite books, On the Island. She graciously outlined the steps an author needed to take to publish a book on their own. Basically how to be an Indie 101. I followed her advice and it was so appreciated. I’ve since met her and become author friends. She’s a truly real person.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Sometimes getting started is the hardest part for me. Once I get typing away and get in a zone, I’m fine. It’s pressing that first letter on my keyboard at times that’s the most difficult.

What are you working on now? What is your next project?

Right now I’m working on Marry Screw Kill. It’s about a young woman engaged to an older man and everything seems to be going full speed ahead until the older man’s young nephew comes to town. Those looking for a cheating story will be disappointed…. 😉

Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

Funny you should mention the shower. When I am at an impasse in my writing, maybe unhappy with the direction or wondering if a plot shift would be good, I take a shower. For some reason it’s often a place of epiphany for me.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

My next novel has some very unusual names that I’m holding close to my vest until its release. I tend to be obsessive over names as much as I do a cover photo, which is a lot.

Are you a plotter or a pantster?

I am somewhere in between a plotter and pantster. I have an outline for the entire book in my head, but I’ve had the story change or divert at times. Some characters are rather bossy like that.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

When my Touch of Tantra series box set made the Amazon top 20 and B&N top 10. It was beyond my wildest dreams.

Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?

Sexual abuse. It’s very unlikely I’ll ever broach that subject.

Is there a certain type of scene that’s harder for you to write than others? Love? Action? Racy?

I don’t really have one specific type of scene that’s harder to write. The one area that I have had to have help writing is medical scenes. I have a close friend who’s a doctor and I’ve asked for her help in making sure my writing is correct.

What is your least favorite part of the publishing / writing process?

Self-promoting.

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

Write for yourself and invest in good content editing.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Boy, that’s a hard one as I’m not a spring chicken. I hope to be able to look back on the last 10 years and realize what a wonderful ride self-publishing has been.

Characters often find themselves in situations they aren’t sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found yourself in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?

I can’t think of anything off the top of my head. I must lead a rather boring and predictable life. 😉

Does your significant other recognize his moves in your writing?

I believe I’ve used a few of his lines from time to time.

What literary character is most like you?

Jane Austen’s Emma. I like to think of myself as a connector of people by wanting them to meet each other and become friends.

What secret talents do you have?

I can twirl a baton!

Where is one place you want to visit that you haven’t been before?

I would love to visit Italy. I’ve been to other countries in Europe but not the home country of my great grand parents.
