Author Interview

Tell us a little about yourself and your background

I’m a born and raised Southern California girl. So, obviously, I love the heat and hate the cold. Since about the age of 15 I’ve held every job under the sun. I write primarily women’s fiction and romance but have dabbled in other genres just for the experience. I love trying new things. I’m married and have two teens (one in college and one in high school), so I’m basically what they call a “starving artist.”

What inspired you to write your first book?

I have always loved being creative, reading, writing, drawing, but I never tried pursuing it as a career. When my kids were little I made a career change that didn’t work out, and I found myself needing a way to express myself and my individuality. That was about five years ago.

What book has had the most influence in your life?

I’d have to say my debut novel, In Search of Lucy, because it had the most impact on my career as an author. I love saying that. After only a few months out there as a self-published novel, the book was picked up by an Amazon Imprint and republished with them, giving it tons of exposure.

How much truth is in your fiction.

Tons! Every character has a piece of me somewhere inside. I try to make them unique and memorable but at the same time my experiences, thoughts, and feelings seep into them. Even the men are like me in some way.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor and why?

This is the worst possible question for me. I don’t have favorites, I don’t pick one book to take on the island, and I’m terrible with decisions. I wander around, discovering new people, new authors, and new inspiration. I meet authors and learn from them and help them in return any way I can.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Focus. I tend to do lots of things at once and I do them very fast. So, it’s tough for me to slow down and focus on the story at hand.

What are you working on now? What is your next project?

My next project will be a four book romance series with each book focusing on a different main character. Ideally, they’ll all be connected but able to be read as standalones. I’ll be holding them all until completion so you might not see anything new from me for a while.

Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

Typically I write in my head first. And yes, the shower is one place. Or walking the dog. I get to know my characters and make them come alive in my brain before I write one word. I plan out scenes, run dialogue, all in my head until it feels real, and then I write.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

Names are not hugely important for the most part. Maybe just the main character. Sometimes I’ll scroll through my facebook friends for name ideas. But I have had to change a name for various reasons and that was awfully difficult.

Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?

At this point I would say no. I like to be open to new things and as I mentioned above, I’ve dabbled in quite a few genres. In fact, I just signed up with a bunch of authors for a SciFi romance series in which we each write a novella about characters in the same “world.” I don’t read science fiction or science fiction romance so this will be a fun challenge.

What is your least favorite part of the publishing / writing process?

I’d have to say the constant struggle to get noticed. There are times when I’m tracking down readers one by one. Typically they come back and say they loved it and provide a review which is so nice. But, to gain momentum in this market is a giant task and a big source of stress for most of the authors I know.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In ten years I’m hoping to be sitting across from Jimmy Fallon talking about the premier of the movie that is based on the book I wrote. I’ll have a cameo in it, of course. I’d like to be able to focus solely on writing with no other part-time jobs and with leaving the logistic of the business to a strategic partner.

Where is one place you want to visit that you haven’t been before?

I’d love to go most anywhere in Europe. I’m not well traveled. If I had to pick one place I’d probably say Italy. I’m one quarter Italian and I’m told I have distant relatives in Sicily. That would be cool to see.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I guess I’d say I’m a workaholic because I don’t have much free time at all. I walk, I watch movies with my family sometimes, and I read most every night before bed. I sound very boring. But I do enjoy spending time meeting authors and readers on Social Media.

About Liar (Liar Book #2)

When all you’ve known are lies, how do you face the truth?

My past was a bitch.

Now it’s come back to haunt me. After months apart, Daniel and I are finally trying to make our relationship work. But my lies run deeper than either of us imagined. Lies so terrible I imprisoned them in the darkest recesses of my mind. Just when my heart begins to come alive, the lies seep out of the shadows…revealing secrets with the power to crush me.

~ ~ ~

Despite both of our troubled pasts, I want her…more than I’ve ever wanted anyone or anything. I’m determined to fight for her—to fight for us—even if it means facing my own demons. I have to reach Gray before it’s too late…before the truth completely destroys her.

Her head turned in my direction and her eyebrows rose before she bent to pull bread out of the oven. This woman would be the end of me if she didn’t stay away from trouble.
“Gray? You know I have to ask. I need to know you’re not in danger.”
She set the bread pan on top of the stove, removed the potholder and walked toward me, eyes narrowed on mine. “I like it when you want to protect me, Daniel,” she said in a silky voice that made my skin blaze. She stopped when we were toe-to-toe. “Come to think of it, that’s when you seem to want to be the closest to me.” Her hand trailed up my arm to my neck. “Maybe I need a little danger in my life to keep you close.”
I reached up and took hold of her wrist and pulled her into me. “Tell me,” I said, commanding her attention. “If this is serious, I need to know.”
“You need to know? Tell me, Daniel. Why do you need to know? What exactly do you want?”
What I wanted to do was put my lips on that little smart mouth of hers and show her just what I wanted. Every part of my body ached to touch every part of hers, but I needed to be patient. I had her number, and I wouldn’t be goaded into sex…no matter how pleasant the thought. I refused to start something I wasn’t yet prepared to finish. First, I needed to make things right.
I grabbed her chin, tugging her face close to mine. “What I want is for you to be safe and happy.”
Her eyes fell to my lips. It took everything in me not to take them right then.
“And what I want…” Her chest rose profoundly, pressing against mine. “…is for you not to burn my damn dinner.”

Author Interview

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I am late bloomer to the author world. Since my childhood, I’ve loved to read, but never thought about writing a book until a few years ago.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I actually started writing as a Twilight fan fiction author. There are many bestselling romance authors that came out of this community and now have very well known books. It was a great training ground for writers. I am very lucky to have seen many friends in this community succeed beyond their wildest dreams as authors.

What book has had the most influence in your life?

The most important book and greatest influence on my life as a writer is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. I fell in love her brooding, tortured Edward Rochester, a truly perfect Byronic character.

How much truth is in your fiction?

My fiction is truly fiction. Or at least it has been so far. There are personality traits from people I have known or places in my books that are actually real. For me, writing is an activity that lets my mind create a unique world with unique characters.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor and why?

When I first started down this road, I looked to a blog post by Tracy Garvis Graves who wrote one of my favorite books, On the Island. She graciously outlined the steps an author needed to take to publish a book on their own. Basically how to be an Indie 101. I followed her advice and it was so appreciated. I’ve since met her and become author friends. She’s a truly real person.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Sometimes getting started is the hardest part for me. Once I get typing away and get in a zone, I’m fine. It’s pressing that first letter on my keyboard at times that’s the most difficult.

What are you working on now? What is your next project?

Right now I’m working on Marry Screw Kill. It’s about a young woman engaged to an older man and everything seems to be going full speed ahead until the older man’s young nephew comes to town. Those looking for a cheating story will be disappointed…. 😉

Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

Funny you should mention the shower. When I am at an impasse in my writing, maybe unhappy with the direction or wondering if a plot shift would be good, I take a shower. For some reason it’s often a place of epiphany for me.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

My next novel has some very unusual names that I’m holding close to my vest until its release. I tend to be obsessive over names as much as I do a cover photo, which is a lot.

Are you a plotter or a pantster?

I am somewhere in between a plotter and pantster. I have an outline for the entire book in my head, but I’ve had the story change or divert at times. Some characters are rather bossy like that.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

When my Touch of Tantra series box set made the Amazon top 20 and B&N top 10. It was beyond my wildest dreams.

Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?

Sexual abuse. It’s very unlikely I’ll ever broach that subject.

Is there a certain type of scene that’s harder for you to write than others? Love? Action? Racy?

I don’t really have one specific type of scene that’s harder to write. The one area that I have had to have help writing is medical scenes. I have a close friend who’s a doctor and I’ve asked for her help in making sure my writing is correct.

What is your least favorite part of the publishing / writing process?

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

Write for yourself and invest in good content editing.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Boy, that’s a hard one as I’m not a spring chicken. I hope to be able to look back on the last 10 years and realize what a wonderful ride self-publishing has been.

Characters often find themselves in situations they aren’t sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found yourself in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?

I can’t think of anything off the top of my head. I must lead a rather boring and predictable life. 😉

Does your significant other recognize his moves in your writing?

I believe I’ve used a few of his lines from time to time.

What literary character is most like you?

Jane Austen’s Emma. I like to think of myself as a connector of people by wanting them to meet each other and become friends.

What secret talents do you have?

I can twirl a baton!

Where is one place you want to visit that you haven’t been before?

I would love to visit Italy. I’ve been to other countries in Europe but not the home country of my great grand parents.
