BODY, INK, and SOUL (Ink, #1) by Jude Ouvrard Release Day + Giveaway

Author: Jude Ouvrard

Publication Date: July 25, 2014

Genre: New Adult Romance

Phoenix Silverstone more commonly known as Nix, is a twenty-one year old that has finally discovered her freedom. After living under the strict rules and protection of her mother, Nix moved out with her two best friends in a quaint little Seattle apartment. For the first time Nix is finally able to spread her wings and breathe. Together, they get a job working at a bar and for the first time everything is perfect.

Freedom, friendships, a great job and fantastic man on the verge of becoming hers. Tristan is the suave, intelligent, not to mention gorgeous law student that Nix has her eyes and heart set on. For the first time, she has her life together; that is, until her path crosses with Levi. The charming, tattooed and downright sexy bad boy that Nix knows she needs to avoid.

But when one of her friends moves out she is shocked to find that her new roommate is none other than Levi. Flirting. Desire. Undeniable temptations. Nix can’t deny the chemistry surging between them but she can’t forget her mother’s extreme hate towards bad boys.

Will Nix have the strength to listen to her heart? Or will her mother’s rules cost her everything?

After a few seconds, a strange sensation started spreading through my body. I lifted my eyes from the photos and my heart stopped. The blood drained from my face and I was pretty certain I was going to pass out. Ink boy was standing not three feet away from me. He had that perfect, sexy grin on his face and he was obviously happy to find me here.

”Are you stalking me now, princess?”

”Princess?” I repeated, with a quirk of my eyebrow.

”I know, I know. Geez, I’m sorry. What are you doing here…? Phoenix?” he asked in an alluring voice. The sound of his voice was so different here, without the club music pulsing in the background.

”What do you think I’m here for, Levi?”

”Are you always so feisty?” His voice sent shivers all over my body.

I nodded. ”My turn to say sorry – I never know how to act around you. You’re so… different.”

”Different? Is that all?” he asked cockily, his lips turning up in that damn smirk.

”You have the worst pickup lines I’ve ever heard.” I tried very hard not to, but I smiled for a split-second. It didn’t matter that I tried to suppress it – he saw me.

”Was that a smile I saw on your lips?” he grinned, stepping closer.

”What do you want from me?” I asked. Why did we pick this shop? Of all the tattoo shops we could have gone to, we had to pick the one place where he hung out? What were the odds?

”You’re the one who’s here, in my shop, so I should be asking you what you want. Are you here for a tattoo?”

”They’re all here for a tattoo. Stop harassing my client, jackass.” The tattoo artist who was prepping Bekka turned to grumble at Levi.

Irritated, Levi looked at the tattoo artist. ”No,” he began, shaking his head. “This one is mine, Kyle. I’ll be the only one marking her.” Levi turned back to me. ”What are you getting tonight? I’ll be taking care of you.”

I thought my heart was going to pound out of my chest. ”A star. A pink star. He has the design,” I said, my voice trembling slightly, as I nodded toward Kyle.

He marched over to Kyle, got the design, and looked at me again. He seemed disappointed. ”Well, I was hoping for something a bit bigger. It’ll only take fifteen to twenty minutes. Are you a virgin?”

What? Was he seriously asking me such a private question in the middle of a shop? ”Hummm…”

”Tattoo virgin, I meant. Have you ever had a tattoo before, Phoenix?” he asked, obviously amused by my flushed face. I shook my head and he glanced down at the design again. ”Are you sure you don’t want your star to be filled in with red? It kind of suits your skin.”

I shook my head, not certain I wanted him doing my tattoo. I didn’t want to know the artist. It would be a lot easier, a lot less intimate, a lot less personal. Not that I knew Levi well, but I was nervous around him, and factoring in the location of where I wanted the tattoo – my nerves reached an all-time high.

”Are you sure you don’t want something a little bigger? It’s a pretty small tattoo.”

”It’s the only tattoo I’m ever going to get and I don’t want it any bigger. This is perfect.”

”We’ll see about that. Where do you want it?” he asked, his eyes roaming across my body.

I pointed to the exact spot where I wanted the tattoo, my eyes never leaving his. Being so close to him was challenging, my stomach was filled with butterflies and the need to touch him and get a closer look at his ink was driving me crazy.

His gaze lowered to where I was pointing, a position just about my pubic bone. ”Okay, I see,” his voice husky. “You’ll have to lower your pants or I’ll get ink all over them.”

”Don’t worry about it. It’s alright.” I wanted to shake my head at my own stupidity. I’d already admitted he made me nervous, I didn’t need to sound like such an idiot!

He smiled and it’s beauty surprised me – it was like seeing him for the first time. This was a glimpse of the real Levi – not the tatted up bad boy with cheap pickup lines. My cheeks grew hot as I blushed at this latest discovery.

”Are you ready?” He offered me his hand and I took it, not knowing why, but I did. It was almost an involuntary reaction. Val was sitting next to Bekka and they both stared at us in disbelief, their gaze taking in our joined hands. This wasn’t normal behaviour for me and both of my friends knew it.

He led me to his work area. ”I’m Levi, by the way.”

”I know, you told me your name last night. I’m Nix.”

”I know. You can sit down here and lower your pants for me. Don’t worry, I’ll be gentle.” He was trying to hide a smile, but I wasn’t stupid. I knew there was a double meaning behind his words and his smirk was due in part to my obvious discomfort.

I’m Kaitlyn.

In my life, rarely are there dull moments. I seem to land myself in these…situations a lot. I am 25, and in college (yes, still!). I have just met the most gorgeous guy, Cole, in my math class. The only problem is that he is a little guarded. Just when I start to make progress with him, my crazy elderly neighbor Marge disappears after visiting some questionable dating sites. Who the hell has even heard of!

Anyway, since my best friend and roommate Hailey and I have kind of adopted Marge, we join forces with her grandson Matt to help find her. Cole even decides to join in the hunt! Along the way, we cross paths with Ben – a creeper who might also be really dangerous.

Will I be able to keep us safe and out of trouble, find Marge, and land the guy? Or will my Twisted Luck screw everything up?

Who runs over a bird? They have wings! They fly! Why didn’t you fly, you stupid bird! Maybe he couldn’t fly. No, that’s not right, he was flying just seconds before his untimely death. I don’t know what to make of this, but Hailey still has wide eyes, and she hasn’t spoken.

“Hails? You okay? That wasn’t your fault, you know. That was just…just crazy weird. I don’t know what it was, but it definitely was not your fault. You’re okay, right?”

It’s quiet for a couple minutes and then she says quietly, “I have a dark aura.”

Blitz: Second Chance Bride by Sandra Edwards

Synopsis: After being jilted, practically at the altar, Genie Wainwright heads to Hawaii to escape the well-meant pity party her friends and family are bound to throw on her behalf. What she never expects is to find someone to help her mend her broken heart.

Donnie Taylor, owner of the posh Sapphire Bay Resort, has no interest in marriage–until he meets an unforgettable guest at the hotel. What starts out as a kindhearted gesture brings Donnie something he never expects–love!

Second Chance Bride ~ Excerpt Copyright©2014 Sandra Edwards

Genie Wainwright stared at her reflection in the mirror, and ignored the light but determined tapping at the door. She remained silent, soaking up the sadness of the now empty bride’s chamber.

Just an hour ago, this room at the Jefferson Hills Country Club had been filled with revelry. Six bridesmaids—including Ross’s sister, Genie’s sisters Amanda and Amber, and three of Genie’s good friends Shelly, Serena and Jessica—throw in the maid of honor (her best friend Cami), Ross’s mother, Genie’s mother and grandmother, and it was like a pre-wedding party before the ceremony.

But that was before Aaron (Ross’s dad) called his wife out into the hallway. When she came back in, she’d lost the smile she’d left with. Genie had known in an instant that something was terribly wrong.

The silent isolation of the now empty room wrapped its icy disdain around Genie, bringing her back to the present. She cleared her throat and pushed aside the memory of that devastating moment when her perfect life had ended. She didn’t want to relieve it again. Not now. Not ever.

“Go away,” Genie said to the incessant knocker.
“Gene, open the door.” Cami’s unrelenting voice traveled through the walls. Genie didn’t respond. Just kept staring at herself in the mirror. Her dark hair

piled on top of her head still looked perfect. Her blue eyes were vacant of anything, even sadness, she thought. But that would come if she succumbed to the tears. She had to keep them imprisoned. She would not shed a single tear over that rat bastard fiancé of hers—make that ex fiancé.

“Genie!” Cami yelled. “If you don’t open the door I’m gonna kick it down.” Yeah, right. Genie laughed a little.
“And you’ll have to pay for it.” Cami said in a firm voice.
“Go for it!” Genie said softly.

An instant later, there was a loud boom and the door swung open.

Genie jumped. Her heart slammed into overdrive. Cami peeked in, then disappear back out into the hallway. Seconds later, she reappeared. Genie’s jaw

Second Chance Bride ~ Excerpt Copyright©2014 Sandra Edwards

dropped as she stared into the mirror, watching Cami waltz into the bride’s chamber in her sleeveless, knee-length blue dress and wearing a triumphant grin.

Genie glanced over her shoulder and twisted around to look at Cami’s feet. Stilettos. No way had she kicked in the door in those. Genie shook her head.

“I warned you.” Cami shrugged and dragged a chair up next to Genie. “I’m your best friend,” she said quietly. Sitting, she raked her light-brown hair behind her ear. “Why wouldn’t you open the door for me?”

“Because I know you.” Genie turned to look at her. “You’ll try to cheer me up.”

“Well, yeah…”

“Don’t you get it?” Genie asked. “There’s nothing that you or anyone else can say that’ll make this better.” It was hopeless. Genie knew that. Why didn’t everyone else?

“Really?” Cami bit her bottom lip and let her gaze roll around the room. When she settled back on Genie, she said in a tone that eventually landed in the realm of a question, “How about…a big-ass meteor crashed into Ross’s house and sent him straight to hell?”

A hint of laughter escaped before Genie could wrangle it in and shove it back down into the despair pitted in her gut.

“Admit it.” Cami nudged Genie. “It was funny.”

Genie nodded. “Yeah, okay. It was kind of funny.” For a minute. But it wasn’t enough to take away the emptiness that’d befallen her a couple of hours ago. Ross had left her—practically at the altar. He hadn’t had the guts to tell her himself that he didn’t want to marry her. He’d left that chore to his parents.

“Look, I know this is hollow comfort,” Cami said softly. “But even on his best day, Ross Harper was never good enough for you.”

“You’re right,” Genie said. It was hollow comfort. She looked at Cami, fighting the tears that were hell-bent on escaping. “I’m supposed to be headed to Hawaii right now. With my husband.” Her voice cracked. She choked the hurt back down into her gut.

“I’d still go…if I were you.” Cami nodded.
“Hell, yes!” Cami smirked beneath deliberately raised eyebrows. “Trade

Ross’s share in. Upgrade. Go in style.”
Genie shook her head. “I can’t do that.”
“Says who?”
“I have to cancel the trip. Give him back half the money.” Genie’s voice

wavered. “Don’t I?”
“No, you don’t.” Cami said with an arrogant laugh. “Ross owes you a hell of a

Second Chance Bride ~ Excerpt Copyright©2014 Sandra Edwards

lot more than a trip to Hawaii. That’s for sure.”
Maybe Cami was right. Ross did owe Genie for the hurt and humiliation he’d

caused her today. But did she really want to spend the next week on the island of Maui—lovers’ paradise—alone?

Genie shook her head. “That’s just what I need. A week at a resort that caters to honeymooners.”

“The heck with that,” Cami said. “Go to Oahu. The north shore, where it’s nice and quiet. There’s that swanky resort up there. Sapphire Bay or something like that. My parents love that place.”

Well if Cami’s parents loved it, that was a sure sign it wouldn’t be a singles’ playground.

Sapphire Bay sounded perfect. Exactly the kind of place Genie could mend her broken heart. A place where there would be no eligible men—at least none that’d pique her interest.

** *
Donnie Taylor had come from old Texas oil money. When he turned twenty-

six, he’d gone to his father with the idea for Sapphire Bay Resort—an upscale haven set in paradise. His father had been hesitant, but Donnie’s mother had insisted—even though her son would be moving half a world away.

Five years later, Sapphire Bay Resort was no longer the best kept secret on the island of Oahu. Located on the North Shore, it appealed to the more discerning customer rather than the party crowd, who liked to hang out at Waikiki. And that’s the way Donnie liked it.

He enjoyed living in paradise. He enjoyed running the resort. What he didn’t enjoy was his mother’s constant nagging about grandchildren. It had gotten worse when she decided to move to Hawaii about a year ago, after his father died.

Donnie hated disappointing her, but how could he make her see that he hadn’t met a women he’d want to spend the rest of his life with, much less father her children.

But that hadn’t stopped Marla Taylor. She’d finagled her way into volunteering at the hotel’s concierge desk, but Donnie knew she was only positioning herself to scan the women as they came and went. So far, she hadn’t throw any of the hotel’s guests at him, but it wasn’t for lack of effort. Donnie knew it was only a matter of time before she found the one she deemed Ms. Right.

He strolled through the open veranda, smiling and greeting hotel guests and staff alike with an amiable nod. His mother wasn’t at the concierge desk, and that troubled him as he headed for the elevator and his office on the second floor.

His secretary, Lorna, hadn’t come in yet. As Donnie recalled, she’d said something about a doctor’s appointment today. Passing by Lorna’s work space, he

Second Chance Bride ~ Excerpt Copyright©2014 Sandra Edwards

wondered where his mother was and what she was up to?
Opening the door to his office, he found Marla Taylor sitting at his desk. She

was in her late fifties and not a bad looking woman—as far as mothers go—and Donnie couldn’t understand why she didn’t concentrate on her own love life.

“Morning, Mother.” He called her mother because he knew it bugged her. “Something wrong with your desk?” He stood beside his chair, staring down at her. “No. I just wanted to talk to you.” Her Texas drawl was alive and kicking and truth be told, so was Donnie’s, just not as pronounced. It was hard to get rid of

something that’d been more than twenty-five years in the making.
“What can I do for you?” he asked, thumbing through the files on his desk,

pretending to look at them.
“Well for starters….”
“Never mind.” He raised a hand as if that’d stop her. But something had to.

Donnie had bigger problems than his mother’s need for grandchildren. “Mom, I really don’t have time right now. Erin called in sick,” he said of one of the two dayshift hostesses for the Beachcomber Café, one of four restaurants on the resort’s grounds. “I’ve got to find a replacement to handle her duties.” There was no way the other hostess, Kelly, could handle the crowd by herself. Donnie wondered if he could get one of the waitresses from the Oceanview to stand in?

Marla stood. “I can do it.” Her voice was calm, but her eagerness was shining brightly on her face.

It wasn’t the greatest idea, but it wasn’t the worst either. Marla could easily handle the task of greeting the coffee shop’s patrons. She’d also be on the female diners like a dog with a bone once she found out they were single. And she would find out.

“Mom…” He glared at her and issued a stern warning. “You can’t be pestering the female diners in the restaurant.”

“Donnie.” She used her scolding tone. What she didn’t know was that it hadn’t worked on him since he’d turned ten. “People in Hawaii are friendly. I intend to merely uphold that tradition.”

He latched onto her arm and guided her toward the door. “Don’t make me regret this, Mother,” he said, shuffling her out into the hallway.

At this point, Donnie had been able to appease the resort’s guests his mother had been interrogating. Thankfully, they were easily amused with comps for dinner at the Wishing Well, Sapphire Bay’s world-renowned steakhouse. He didn’t want to get to the point where he had to start handing out free passes to the hotel’s best suites because of his mother’s hare-brained schemes.

Title: Mr. X

Author: Clarissa Wild

Publication Date: July 21, 2014

Genre: Dark Romance

He’s come to kill me.

I’m a user and abuser of my own body. In my darkest hour I sold my soul to the devil and now I must pay the price. With his gun to my head I have no choice but to listen and obey, but I refuse to go down easily. Nothing is stronger than the will to survive. My instincts kicked into full gear the second he stepped into my motel room.

Except when I look at him I see my own heart staring back at me. A history tainted by blood.

I don’t know his name, but I know he wants me. To save myself I’ll sacrifice my sanity. My body. My soul. Something tells me the x-shaped scar that marks his eye is the only escape I have. He is Mr. X: the man who comes to claim my life. Can I save myself before he demands my heart?

WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious consent, breath deprivation, strong language, drugs and alcohol, and graphic violence.

She clenches her teeth. “You can’t keep me here …”

“Watch me.” I lean against the wall, picking up a lighter and a pack of cigarettes. I’ve been dying for a smoke ever since I found her in that room.

“And then what? Is this supposed to scare me?” she says, her hand fisted like she’s trying to resist, even though there is no way out of this.

I smile and put down the lighter. “If you think I am doing all this just to scare you, you’re mistaken.”

“Then what is the reason, huh? Why are you keeping me prisoner?” She fights the tears in her eyes. I can’t help feel a little overcome with the urge to grab her and kiss her to take away all the hurt. However, I can’t. The past cannot be erased. What we are is set in stone and nothing can chafe away the rugged surface of our souls. I’d be a liar if I said it doesn’t pain me to see her hurt, but I like pain. I live for it. I was reborn in it.

I don’t fear it. On the contrary, I survive on it. Pain is a means to an end and her pain is my end. If she stops feeling pain, then so do I, and that would mean the end.

It’s too soon.

I need her pain to feel alive. And so, I will continue to make her answer for her sins.

“A man must do what a man must do,” I say.

“A man? How can you call yourself a man? You’re a monster.” The look in her eyes, so in awe of my wickedness, is exhilarating.

I smile. “Thank you.”

Her jaw drops, a brow rises, and she snarls. It’s amusing to see the mixed emotions scatter on her face. “Are you insane? Why are you thanking me?”

“Because I’d rather be a monster than a man in your eyes. Being a monster beats being a wretched human being. You’ve freed me of the burden of having to act sane. So yes, you could say that I am insane.”

She just stares at me, her mouth open, but in complete silence, like she’s at a loss for words.

“Believe me when I say you are better off with me than out there,” I say.

“You’re mad! You wanted to kill me, and now you say I’ll be safe with you?” she scoffs.

“I never said you’ll be safe with me. I can get quite dangerous …” A smile quirks up my face.

She shivers. Clutching her body, she stampedes toward me. “Let me out.”

I grab both her arms, squeezing tight as I hold her back and look down at her. “You don’t want to do that.”

“I want anything but staying here with you.” She tries to jerk free, but I keep her close, forcing her to listen. She cannot leave me, because I won’t allow it, but I’ll give her a good reason as well.

“Do you think I am the worst thing that could overcome you?” I lean forward and whisper into her ear. “There is more evil out there than you think.”

Her breath comes in short gasps, her tits pushing up against me as her chest rises. Courage is making place for fear again, I can feel it on her skin. It’s riveting. She fights me, her arms locking with mine as she attempts to free herself from my grasp, but I twist her in my arms and keep her hands behind her back. Her ass is bumping against my cock, straining it to the limit. God, I love it when she struggles.

I never stopped loving it.

“Do you think I’m the only one who came for you, huh?” I whisper in her ear. “That I’m the only one who wants you dead?”

She shakes her head, and I can feel her heart thrumming through her chest.

“Did you see those men that were following us? Can you guess what they wanted?”

I smirk. “Great deduction. Now, there is a difference between them and me; can you tell me what it is?”

It’s quiet for a few seconds. I guess she really hasn’t figured it out yet.

“They want your head. I want your body.”

She swallows, and it turns me on so much I want to rip off her clothes right now and do her against the door. But I don’t. Taking her would be so easy, it would take all the fun out of it. I want her to offer herself to me willingly. I want to see the regret in her eyes afterwards when she realizes she gave her body to the devil.

“But …. I don’t understand. I thought you wanted me dead?”

“I did. Now I want more.”

She gasps. “Why? What changed?”

“I did.”

Top Qualities of a Book Boyfriend

He should provide valuable services. Okay, get your mind out of the gutter! Nonconjugal services. For instance, I love food. I hate to cook. Give me a book boyfriend who can whip up some amazing breakfast. Or since I can’t play an instrument, a guitar player would be hot.

I want him to be ripped without wasting too much time at the gym. This is a fantasy, right? I don’t want my boy getting sweaty on the weight bench, when he could be getting sweaty doing other things. Okay, now my mind is in the gutter.

RESPECT! I’ll admit that I get a little flustered when a book boyfriend swoops in to save the day, but I don’t need him to boss me around or go 100% alpha male. I only want to be barefoot in the kitchen while he makes me breakfast.

The cliche is true. I want a guy who makes me laugh. Life is serious enough, my book boyfriend needs to be able to break the tension.

And book boyfriends should always put their dirty clothes in the hamper. Every woman’s fantasy.

Jessica Stone has her life in perfect order until her perfectly boring boyfriend Brett puts things in perspective. So when she receives a call to action from her heartbroken best friend Cassie, she ditches her plans for Winter Break in gloomy Olympic Falls and sets off to Mexico for some fun in the sun.

Determined to use her oceanview to prep for her MCATS, she doesn’t plan to run into anyone from Olympic State, least of all the cute communications prof she’s been crushing on for a year. When he unexpectedly saves the day, the two are thrown together in a distinctly extracurricular activity.

Roman Markson doesn’t expect to run into anyone he knows from Olympic Falls while visiting his family in Puerto Vallarta, especially not a former student. Although Jess Stone has a way of catching men’s attention, a relationship with her is strictly off-limits. However, the rules feel less strict in Mexico, so they agree to a plan: one week in paradise and nothing more.

But avoiding each other back on campus is harder than they anticipated, especially when they can’t stay away from one another. Neither is sure what they have to learn—and lose—before life teaches them a lesson they’ll never forget.

Falling for Her Husband

She traced his lips with her fingertip, her touch so light it sent a shiver stealing through him. He parted his lips and she dropped her hand, brushed his mouth with hers again, softer this time. Lingering. As if she wanted more.

God knew he wanted more. Needed more. He’d missed his wife so damn much.

Reaching up, he cupped her uninjured cheek, holding her to him as he took over the kiss, parting her lips with his delving tongue. She welcomed him, the soft sound of pleasure making his skin tight, and he slid his fingers into her thick, silky hair, holding her to him.

When was the last time they kissed like this? He couldn’t remember. All he knew was he could devour her. Kiss her for hours. Touch her everywhere. Slowly strip off her clothes…

“Sorry.” He broke away from her still seeking lips, feeling like an ass. “We’ve gone too far.”

“What? Are you serious?” The teasing smile curving her lips would be the death of him. He knew it. “We aren’t teenagers with curfews, Vince. You’re my husband. You can do with me what you wish.”

If that wasn’t a bold invitation… “You’re still in recovery, Amber. I can’t push too hard. I don’t want to hurt you.”

“I’m not dead.” She slid closer to him, pressing her cheek to his so her lips rested just beside his ear. “I want you. It’s been too long since I’ve felt you inside me.”

If she only knew the truth to that statement. They hadn’t been together in months. And her words of promise, the way she moved against him, the honey sweet taste of her still on his lips…it was taking everything within him not to jump her. Take her back to their new bedroom and christen that giant king-sized bed properly.

“Amber,” he said warningly, but it was no use. His persistent wife was now nibbling on his ear.

And she knew how much he loved that. What it did to him. Such a dirty trick.

“If you’re afraid you’ll hurt me, don’t be.” She nipped his earlobe, and a low hum that he couldn’t hold back escaped him. “I know you’ll be gentle this time. We can take it slow. Can’t we?”

He wanted to. God knew how badly he missed having her beneath him, naked and willing. But it would kill him if he hurt her. He’d never forgive himself. And what if he couldn’t control himself? Her body, the way she responded to his every touch and kiss had always been his weakness. The first time they met she’d flashed that wicked smile at him and he’d been done. Dead.

They’d moved fast. One minute they were flirting, the next, they were kissing. And then…he got her into his bed.

He never let her out of his life after that. Sexually, they were combustible.

Could he hold himself back if he had her naked in his bed? He wasn’t sure.

She’s desperate to remember…and he’s desperate to forget.

The Renaldis, Book 3

As one of the heads of his family’s well-respected fashion house, Vincenzo Renaldi is used to living life at light speed. His relationship with Amber, a successful model, was the definition of “jet-set”, from whirlwind romance to quickie wedding. Now, at the rate these two workaholics are going, they may as well live in two different worlds.

Determined to recapture the magic that drew them together, Vince flies to New York to confront his wife. And only succeeds in chasing her away—straight into the path of a moving car.

When Amber awakens in the hospital, she’s overjoyed to see her husband by her side. Yet there’s something behind the relief in his tired eyes. And something behind his determination to treat her like a queen. Something that lurks just beyond the shadows of her missing memories.

And when the truth re-emerges, the pain could be a sign of healing…or the final straw that tears them apart once and for all.

Warning: The last of the Renaldi brothers finally gets his story. Which means a hot and possessive Italian man is on the menu, determined to show his beautiful wife just how much he loves her. In every sizzling, sexy way he can.

About No Regrets

On my last birthday, I made one vow for the year. Live with no regrets. Eleven months have passed, though, and nothing has changed. I still sleep alone, spend my life working, and never move out of my comfort zone.

Then the loss of my dog throws my whole life out of orbit, and I end up in bed with a very hot and slightly-too-young veterinarian, who has recently made a vow of his own. Live with no strings. Josh is more than happy to help me with the things I’ve been afraid to try. Semi-public sex. Spanking. Anal sex. He’s a willing partner for everything I’ve wondered about, as long as I don’t demand more.

He’s serious about his no-strings philosophy. As serious as I am about living with no regrets. I can’t help but fall for him, even though I know better. So my biggest regret might be a broken heart.

I couldn’t stay on this park bench forever.

I hadn’t moved yet. I was still staring blindly at the dogs and people on the path when I noticed from the corner of my eye a man slowing down from a run and then jogging toward me.
Glancing over, I expected him to head past me toward the parking lot, but he seemed to be coming directly toward me.
When he got close, I realized it was Dr. Bennett.
He looked different than he had this morning. He wore a t-shirt and gym shorts, both wet with perspiration. His face and short brown hair were wet too. He’d obviously been running hard.
His eyes rested on me as he approached. Obviously, he’d recognized me. Before I’d recognized him.
“Hey,” he said, breathing heavily. “How are you doing?”
It was a stupid question and a stupid answer, but that’s what people do. It was part of living in a civilized world. You made up nice-sounding lies and you said them to each other, instead of talking about how much the world sucked.
His face was flushed, and he was having trouble catching his breath. Bending at the waist, he rasped, “I better do a lap to cool down. I’ll be right back.”
I had no idea why he’d bother coming back. We didn’t know each other. We had nothing to say to each other. And I wasn’t really in the mood for talking.
He’d killed my dog that morning, but I could hardly hold it against him.
He took a slow jog around the track and ended up back at the bench with a water bottle in his hand. His breathing was less ragged as he sat down beside me.
He didn’t say anything, and I felt a little strange. I didn’t know exactly what he expected from me. I certainly wasn’t going to cry on his shoulder, if that was what he was thinking.
So I just asked a casual question. “You’re done with your shift for the day?”
“Yeah. I got off at three.”
“Do you always come here to run afterwards?”
“Sometimes.” His vivid blue eyes rested on my face, searching or questioning or something. “It’s on the way home.”
“Have you lived in Lexington long?”
“I grew up here—in Versailles, actually. But I just moved back to the area.”
“Where were you before?”
“Vet school.”
“Oh.” I blinked, slightly surprised. I’d landed on his age as younger than me but still in his thirties, but he must be quite a bit younger if he was just out of vet school. “So you just got your degree?”
“Yeah.” As if he could see the surprise in my face, he added, “I started late. I didn’t go right after college.”
That made more sense. The conversation, as casual as it was, managed to distract me from thoughts of Polly, so I pursued it. “What were you doing before you went to vet school.”
He didn’t answer immediately, which prompted my curiosity. To take the edge off the silence, I said, “Bank robber? Computer hacker?”
He gave a low chuckle and smiled at me—not broadly, but it still transformed his face until he was almost unbearably attractive, even as sweaty as he was. “Nothing that exciting. I was in Chad.”
“Chad? In Africa?
“Wow.” My eyes widened in surprise. “What were you doing there?”
“International aid work. I started right after college and did it through most of my twenties. I was mostly in Chad and Sudan.”
“So what made you decide to be a vet instead?”
He gave a strange little shrug and looked away from me. “I couldn’t do it anymore. And animals…are different.”
I studied him, trying to read his expression, trying to interpret the paradoxically empty bitterness on his face. There was obviously more going on with him, but there was no reason to expect him to tell me.
There was no reason I needed to know.
“What do you do?” he asked, obviously trying to change the subject.
“Who do you work for?”
We chatted for almost a half-hour, about my job, about how he was settling back into the area, about running—which I used to do, although not much recently.
Eventually, the perspiration had dried on his skin and his clothes, and we’d both faded into reflective silence.
I felt a little better—like I wasn’t on the verge of tears—but the thought of going home still filled my stomach with dread.
He’d been staring off in the distance, and he said without warning, “This morning was the first time I’ve had to do that.”
I glanced at him in surprise, realizing immediately what he was referring to. “Aren’t you supposed to be professional and distanced about the whole thing?”
“I guess. I thought I’d be able to keep the right perspective with animals, but it was harder than I thought. She seemed like a very sweet dog.”
I took a loud, ragged breath as emotion surged up. “She was.”
“I’m really sorry.”
“Thanks.” I took a few more breaths until I was in control again. “I really don’t want to go home.”
“Do you want to get a drink or something?”
I blinked. “Right now, you mean?”
“Yeah. Why not? I don’t want to go home either.”
I finally landed on an explanation for his mood. He seemed adrift, kind of lost, not emotional but torn in some way.
I wondered what he’d experienced in Chad. What it had done to him. Why he’d decided against working with people anymore.
Even yesterday, I would have said “no” to his invitation. For the last few months, I hadn’t done much of anything except go to work and take care of Polly. I hadn’t liked to leave her in the evenings.
It had been years since I’d had a drink with a guy I didn’t know, and this particular guy was too young for me anyway.
But it was just a drink. Nothing more. He wasn’t coming on to me. He was just being nice. And it would give me something to do with myself, other than go home to an apartment without Polly.
I felt a little better, talking to him. Like the world wasn’t about to pull me into some sort of black hole.
I remembered my vow, eleven months ago, on the day I’d turned thirty-eight.
I was supposed to be living with no regrets, and so far I hadn’t done a good job.
This would be something I wouldn’t have to regret.
“Okay,” I said. “Why not?”
